I want to launch a small food venture but don’t have enough savings. I’m considering borrowing money from family to get started.
I borrowed money from a relative to start a small food stall several years ago. The business eventually worked out, but the stress was far greater than I expected. Every slow week felt personal because I knew someone else’s money was involved. If you borrow money, be extremely conservative with your projections. Assume sales will be lower and expenses will be higher than expected. Start as small as possible and validate demand before spending heavily on branding, equipment, or rent.
