I have a BPS-17 job in a federal ministry and just got an offer from a multinational for almost 3x my current salary. Everyone in my family is telling me I’m crazy to even consider leaving. Am I?
I made this exact switch in 2019, BPS-16 to a telecom company. Here is what nobody tells you: calculate your pension value first. A government pension at retirement is essentially a lifelong annuity worth crores in present value. If you’re under 35 and have under 10 years of service, the math usually favors switching because you have time to build private savings. If you’re over 40 with 15+ years in, think very carefully. Also factor in job security during recessions, IMF cycles hit private sector hard in Pakistan. My advice: take the private job only if the company is an established MNC with regional offices, not a local startup offering big numbers.
The salary difference sounds huge but run actual numbers. Government perks like housing allowance, medical for your whole family, utility bills, and children’s education support can add another 40-60% on top of your basic. I left a semi-government organization for private in 2021 and my take-home felt lower for the first year once I was paying full rent and private health insurance. Negotiate hard on the private offer specifically ask for health coverage that includes parents, and get your increment cycle in writing. Then if the net difference is still 2x or more, go for it.
